Bollywood Fashion Awards in NYC: July 31st, 2006

What
is there to say about the Bollywood Fashion Awards?
A show that has been packed with stars in the past was a bit of a
disappointment this year.
Don’t be sad just yet!
There were, however, some of the biggest names today in American and
Indian fashion to help the show sail smoothly.
With it’s Indian supermodels AND international supermodel, Iman,
the best of fashion electrified the glamorous Roseland Ballroom in NYC.

Illuminated
by green laser lighting and spotlights, the runway was elevated above countless
rows of seating and mysterious music filled the ballroom as guests filed in.
The show opened a half hour late due to desi-standard timing and host, Manu
Narayan of the hit Broadway show, “Bombay Dreams”, took the stage
with the first-time release of Sa-re-ga-ma
and the lyrics of Baby Come to My Hotel,
accompanied by two belly dancing Indian girls and someone with an afro singing
rap. Cliché?
We’ve heard it, seen it and STILL don’t like it so, stick to
the acting Manu! Among all
the chaos, in the audience were fashion elitists, such as Ayesha of BIBI
magazine, beauty queens such as Saadia Alvi (2006 winner of Miss
Pakistan World/ Miss Talent), stylists to the stars and upcoming
designers. Not to mention,
designer Rachel Roy and her record mogul husband, Damon Dash along with
their daughter,
Ava.

|
Aside from Mr. Narayan’s strange musical performance,
there were other, easier and more entertaining pills to swallow.
The performer’s roster included DJ Sanj, Amir Jamal, Sourabh Jain and
Rouge…all equipped with a team of background dancers!
Throw in a tribute to Sammy Davis JR. and some Sari’s and you’ve got
yourself an eclectic mix of East and West, to say the least.

THE RUNWAY
Now for the best part of the evening, which is the fashion!
The showcase of clothing featured big-league designers Manish Malhotra,
Sabyasachi Mukherjee and rookie, Sushma Patel.
Each collection was unique and completely wearable by any star or starlet
but we’ll be wearing the knock-offs because this stuff does not look
affordable for the average person! |
 |
Taking a closer look at
Manish Malhotra, his designs were filled with bright, summery colors and elegant
floral patterns. Saris filled a
majority of his collection, (and the same goes for Sushma), completely full of
silver embellishments and beadwork. Chiffons
and other very light fabrics were used abundantly in the collection for the
saris and skirts.

|

|
As for Sabyasachi, his collection ended
off the show, leaving audience members in confusion…mainly those who are
unfamiliar with offbeat fashion. Milkmaids
or nurses? With their strange
little hats, the models wore strictly earth-toned frocks with churi pajamas
and an occasional chaniya choli. Black
and white was a main focus of the collection and embroidery graced the trim of
each garment. It may be unwearable
by most, but Rani Mukherjee is caught wearing Sabyasachi to several events and
looks far from a milkmaid.

You’ve been told how
amazing the clothing was, but I haven’t told you about the models yet.
HOT…the one word that describes all of them. Household names such as Aditi Govitrikar (former
pageant queen), Nethra (best super-model of the year) and Aryan Vaid
(also best super-model of the year), were a few of the big names of the Indian
modeling world. Along with the
professionals was the recently crowned Miss Pakistan World, Sehr Mahmood. How did I know when she walked in the show?
She was about four feet smaller than the rest of the models!
Still, the models were great eye-candy.

Models, performances and clothing were not the only
things at this show, but who cares about the awards?
If you’re curious…the most legit award went to designer Rachel
Roy for her tremendous contributions to American fashion. Her presenter was none other than the Somalian
super-model, Iman and they both stood with captivating presences that
could not be matched by any model/singer/celebrity at the show.
Not only did Rachel make a fashionably late entrance to the show,
taking everyone’s breath away, but she also received her award and left the
show through backstage to avoid the masses.
As a whole, the show was very successful and
entertaining. Our only complaint
would be the lack of Bollywood celebrities this year and we hope to bring you
more coverage from events! Cheers to the Bollywood Fashion
Awards!
